Summer Series Results from One Tree Hill

Results from courses:   One   Two   Three   Four   Memory  Special

Well the weather was certainly great for our first visit to One Tree Hill this season.  And the park provided a few challenges of its own, the long grass in the fields being just one of them.  The courses were a little shorter than usual tonight, but we did have the added challenge of a Memory Course this week. 

A Memory Course is orienteering without carrying a map.  You only have a small piece of map at the start showing you where the first control is.  When you get to the control (perhaps that should say IF you get to the control?), you have another small piece of map showing where the next one is, and so on.  Your only solution if you cannot find it is to go back and look at the piece of map again!  For quite a few people, they attempted a Memory course for the first time, so well done, but even some of our more experienced (dare I say senior?) orienteers suffered a few hiccups.  I am sure there are a few DNFs lurking out there.

On the main courses, 1 through 4 all attracted a good number of entries, with course 3 proving the most popular.  It was a great turn out in numbers, so well done everyone.  Judging by the comments in the finish area, you all seemed to have enjoyed yourselves.  A few people did have an interesting time when they followed the list of control descriptions in order, rather than their course listed at the bottom of the map.  One was heard to remark “I couldn’t figure out why we never visited the controls in the same order as everyone else!”.  We can only apologise if we did not make it clear enough at the start.

Thank-you for respecting the park, there was no sign we had been there when the controls had been collected, and that is always a great thing for the organisers.  This was my first attempt at setting a course, so thank-you to Selwyn the controller, and also to the Stewarts who do so much to make the summer series possible for us all to enjoy.

It was a beautiful day last Sunday for the club relays at Tawharanui. Congratulations to the NW club for claiming the title. Results can be found on the AOC web page. Congratulations also to Simon Jager who was the winner of the 2 hour rogaine held on Saturday evening. A small but enthusiastic group enjoyed a lovely moonlit evening running over the Tawharanui hills. Those of us camping the night up there spared a thought for those of you still in Auckland!
