I doubt if anyone who came along tonight went home without feeling they had had their exercise. It is the first time I can remember that we had several enquiries as to whether we had any drinks for sale! Even if you did not visit Mt St John or Mt Hobson the heat of the evening – still 25 degrees at 8 o’clock certainly made up for lack of climb. It was great to see some new faces there tonight – we hope you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to seeing you back again soon. A big thank you to our course setter and controller, Sandra and Heather. Sandra set her first course for us at the Domain at the beginning of this season and then kindly volunteered to do another in this half of the season – most appreciated. Thanks also very much to those who helped out during the evening, and also at recent events, helping set up, talk to new comers, pack up and collect controls. The setter, controller and other summer series regular helpers are often somewhat tired by the end of the evening and the help of a few more hands certainly makes a huge difference.

Next week the event is on THURSDAY 7th February (the day after Waitangi day) on the One Tree Hill map, with registration and parking in Haydn Ave, off Manukau Rd, just past the Manukau Rd entrance into the park, heading from town. This event is also part of the Waitangi carnival of events which begins in Taupo this weekend, including the hotly contested night relays between clubs, a highlight of the club year. Then there are events in the Hamilton region Monday to Wednesday, our Summer Series event on Thursday and then 2 more events just north of Auckland the following weekend – the keen competitive orienteers are certainly going to have plenty to keep them busy! Those of you who have so far stuck to summer series orienteering can aim to be doing these events this time next year!

Note: as the One Tree Hill event is part of the Waitangi Carnival we are hoping to put on an extra ‘ultra short’ sprint course – only about 1.5km, using electronic timing, for those who want a very fast dash to warm up or warm down after their course. As the fun of these sort of event is lots of people competing in close proximity it is planned for this course to only be open from 6 pm to about 6.30, with 30second start intervals. If you would like to do this course and have an e card please bring it to the event. There will also be a contours only course, as well as the usual 4 courses. So don’t worry, you will still be able to do your usual type of course.

Also Note: again because there may be extra competitors as part of the Waitangi weekend, and as some may want to do an ordinary course before taking part in the ultra short, we will aim to have the courses open by 5pm next week.
