It would have been hard to believe 24 hours earlier that we would be out on a sunny evening running around Epsom Campus tonight. Many people had had a sleepless night listening to the rain and watching for the flood water to once more return. Our thoughts go out to all of you who have suffered badly in the weather of the last few days. I know there were quite a few who could not come tonight as they were very preoccupied trying to sort out their flooded homes. It was a hard decision as to whether it was appropriate for the event to go ahead but with the sun out we hoped it would offered some relief from what has been a very tough time for many people.
Our thanks to Gavin and Alina for the challenging and interesting courses on what is probably our best map. Unfortunately, with the University going to vacate the campus, we may not get many more opportunities to use this map, so we were grateful to them for permitting us there today.
The aftereffects of this week’s weather unfortunately have taken a very big toll on our event next week but thanks to the determination of the setter and controller of the event it will go ahead as scheduled, starting from Phyllis Reserve in Waterview, on WEDNESDAY, 8th February. However it will be an event with a difference as a very large part of the map has been completely destroyed, just after several club members had spent considerable time updating the map in the area now lost To compensate for the problems with the loss of much of the more interesting parts of the courses they had set, the setter and controller are planning some different sort of options, however we ask you to be understanding if the longer courses have to involve more road running legs than normal.
Perhaps it is an appropriate time to say that orienteering events are held, regardless of the weather, unless there is a safety issue. Please always before coming to an event check the website to ensure there has been no change. We received quite a few queries today about the event, which was understandable but if there is a cancellation or postponement, we will always put it clearly on the webpage and on Facebook. Unless we say there has been a change you can assume it will go ahead. It is a very rare occurrence for an event to be cancelled but there have been occasions when rivers levels have prevent access, forests get closed because of fire risk or high winds etc.
