With such a lovely evening as it was tonight it is hard to realise that the summer is coming to an end and with it SummerNav has now finished for the season. However, for those trying to collect in the controls from the Domain bush at the end of the event the reason was very clear – it was VERY dark!! Thanks go to Campbell, Russell and Monique tonight for a very challenging set of courses. The contour only courses were especially appreciated by the club members who are in training for the Nationals in the South Island at Easter – it certainly makes it a challenge!
Our thanks to you all for coming along to the events throughout the season and making the work put in by many club members so worthwhile. Your cheery greetings and smiles even when you are returning hot and exhausted are always appreciated. We look forward to seeing you all back when SummerNav commences again at the end of October. In the meantime there is a whole programme of events coming up. There are events on the outskirts of Auckland on Sunday mornings, about every second weekend. These mainly are the AOS series usually with starts any time between 10 am and 12.30. These have 9 courses available so one suitable for EVERYONE. There is also the rogaine series on Sunday mornings with a mass start at 11.00am, again suitable for all. If you are not able to head so far out of town then in June there is a series of Short O events {similar to course 3 at SummerNav) on Saturday afternoons, starts between 4 and 4.45, around city maps, or the night street event series in May and September which start from venues around the city with a mass start at 7pm, using a black and white street map and staying on paths. The details of all these events, as they become available, can be found on the Auckland Orienteering Club website. The first one is an AOS series event on Sunday 31st March on the Rototoa map which is on the South Kaipara Peninsula, north of Parakai. However please note this is a special event as it is also the trials for our juniors for the Junior World Champs so the JWOC trialists will run first from 9.30 with the rest of us starting any time between 11.30 and 2.00pm.
We do hope to meet you at an event over winter, but if not, see you in 6 months at the first SummerNav 2019-2020 event!!
