Map

  • Each person will receive a detailed colour orienteering map.
  • The map will use the international orienteering map standards and have a legend to explain the meaning of each symbol and colour.
  • The map shows the terrain features and how easy it is to traverse. The event centre and start/finish location is marked as a purple triangle.
  • The map scale will be 1:10,000 and the contour interval 2.5 metres.

Controls and the collection of points

  • The map will also indicate the location of all of the Controls you can visit to collect points.
  • Each Control has an indentifying Control-Number, and a points value.
  • A Control will be located exactly in the centre of a purple circle on the map.
  • Control descriptions will give a better description of the Controls location and its points value.
  • Points details will be advised at briefing.

Timing and Penalties

  • SPORTident timing controls and cards will be used to record which controls each team visits.
  • One SPORTident card is required for each team.
  • Register and bring your own SPORTident card number if you have one.
  • Hire a SPORTident card for the event for $3 and collect it at registration on the day. (Note Lost cards are $65 for replacement, so be sure to secure it carefully and use the backup wrist elastic). Instruction on their use will be given prior to the start during the briefing.
  • Your time will start when you punch the Start Control.
  • Your time will stop when you punch the Finish Control.
  • You have up to three hours to visit as many controls as you like, in any order to gather points. If you visit a control more than once, no additional points are gained. Teams may return back to the Event Centre earlier or at anytime throughout the event. If teams have the same number of points, the team with the lowest time will be ranked higher.
  • If you finish after your maximum time of three hours, you will receive a 10 point penalty per minute or part thereof. This will be confirmed at event breifing.

Participants Equipment:

Each "Team" or "Indivdual Entry" is required to carry as a minimum:

  • Map
  • Compass
  • SPORTident Card
  • Watch or other time keeping device

We recommend:

  • Whistle (Emergency signal is 6 short blasts - followed by a pause to listen for a reply - and then repeat until help can locate you and arrive. Do not use the whistle otherwise as it will ruin the event for all who hear it).
  • Spare Polypro top
  • Rain coat. (Note: If you are injured, although there is Road access to most areas, it may take an hour or more to send someone to advise the start area and for help to arrive).
  • Foil Emergency Blanket
  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Drinking water (Note: No water on course. Water only available at event registration).
  • Snacks
  • Money to visit cafe at Muriwai

Safety

  • Team members must stay together for the duration of the event and all team members must visually see the control.
  • If any team member is hurt, apply first aid as necessary, and send someone to the event centre to advise them of the incident, with details of the injury and location. If you require emergency assistance - blow your whistle 6 times, pause and listen for reply to attract the attention of other competitors and repeat.
  • If you hear 6 short blasts on a whistle you are required to abandon your course and see if you can assist or advise registration.
  • In the event of becoming geographically embarrassed or lost, head West until you hit Coast Rd, and then South to the event centre.

Special Forest Gate Entry Instructions

IMPORTANT NOTE: Forest security now means that every car
must be positively identified as a car
going to the orienteering Rogaine event.

To get a copy of the gate security form by automatic reply, send an email to us.

There are two ways of proving your identity:

  • The first is to show an SPORTIdent card (one per vehicle is sufficient). This electronic card is unique to orienteering and will be accepted as proof of identity by the gate person.
  • For those without an e-card available, you’ll need to show the gate person a unique form. We will send a copy to all pre-registered competitors at Friday around midday. If you haven't registered before then - email gateform [at] navevent.co.nz for a copy.

Without either this form or an SPORTident card the gate man will question you until he is certain you have come to the forest to participate in the Rogaine run by Auckland Orienteering Club.
