Summer Series Results 4/02/2009

Well I think we all got our money’s worth today! I hope you were not too exhausted to appreciate the lovely views when you reached the high points on your course. Mangere Mountain is perhaps one of the lesser known of Auckland’s volcanic cones but certainly a delightful one. As I scrambled up one of its slopes for the second time tonight I decided it was a compliment to those of us who are perhaps not as young and fit as we once were that our young course setter and controller had faith in us being capable of such feats. Thanks Alina and Toby for your courses tonight – we will all sleep well but it was great to be given a good physical challenge after a few flatter maps of late, and another one to come next week.

Next week we change to TUESDAY (10th February) and are on the Michael Ave Reserve map in Ellerslie. Access is from Michaels Ave. Michaels Ave runs between Marua Rd and the Ellerslie Panmure Highway. Parking within the park can sometimes get a little tight if there are sport practices taking place at the same time so some of you may need to park on the road.

Also coming up in only 10 days time, on SUNDAY, 15th February is the first of our forest events for the year – Summer Forest Event 1 in Woodhill Forest on the Muriwai map. Access through Muriwai. Take the NW motorway to SH16, through Kumeu and turn left at Waimauku on the Muriwai road. It will be signposted from here. As you enter Muriwai, by the fire station, turn right along Coast Road and drive past the golf course to the gate at the end. This will be manned and you will need to say you are there for orienteering. You will also need to sign a form to allow you forest access.

Starts are between 10.00am and 12.30. Make sure you have this marked in red on your calendar! If you have yet to try a forest event this is definitely your chance to find out why we are hooked on the sport. If you enjoy park orienteering you will love the forest. There will be plenty of us on hand to have a chat to first time forest orienteers about the skills you may need to use in the forest and there will be six courses to cater for all levels of fitness and experience. Summer Series orienteers who have yet to orienteer in the forest will be offered a free run at this event – just tell us at registration that this is your first time in the forest.
Club orienteers, don’t forget the Nationals are in Auckland this Easter, with the long distance event not far up the road from the event of this event and the relays closer still. With only a couple of months to get back into top form make sure you don’t miss this opportunity.

First time orienteering in the forest - free

The electronic timing system will also be used at this event so those of you who do not own an e card will need to hire one ($3, free for 10 year olds and under). They can be purchased for $50 (but with the dollar doing what it is doing are likely to be dearer next time we buy them!)

SPECIAL OFFER: For those of you who have been enjoying the summer series and now think you would like to join the club, if you join between now and the end of the Summer Series we will offer you free runs at any of the remaining summer series city events that you attend. Just fill in the membership form from the web or collect a form at any summer series event.

Transport help needed. We have a young man from Spain visiting Auckland until the end of March who is attending the Summer Series events. He is staying in Central Auckland. If there is anyone who comes to most of the events from the direction of town and could offer him a lift it would be most appreciated. Auckland is not an easy place to get around by public transport. He could get himself to a convenient meeting place. If you think you could help if you could respond to this email we will put you in touch with one another.

Lost property – a drivers license was handed in at our event last week at Point England. If it is yours please let us know and we will get it back to you. Also we have someones compass.
