How kind of the weather man to turn on a very pleasant temperature and conditions for us all to run around in tonight! Despite the predictions of cyclones (which may have kept some of you tucked up at home) theconditions genuinely were very pleasant for orienteering in - still warm but not suffocating. Thanks to Rob and Mervyn for the courses tonight. While most of us have been off holidaying they have had to be working to prepare tonight's event. It was a nice gentle break back into orienteering after what for many has been a lazy last few weeks.
It was great to see the large number of people there getting in some serious training before the 'Sprint the Bays' weekend in the Hawkes Bay. All the best to you all. Have a great weekend, go well and drive carefully.
Next week SummerNav is again on TUESDAY, 25th January, starting in the Sacred Heart College grounds, West Tamaki Rd, Glendowie. Entry will be via the most eastern gate - the one closest to Roberta Avenue. Registration will be located in the car park down by the swimming pool. The longer courses will also visit some of the surrounding park areas. We look forward to seeing you there!

Another lovely evening and a great turn out of people back from holidays and keen to get out and enjoy the summer evening. A very big welcome to the many newcomers there tonight, as well as some old friends who we have not seen for a very long time - we look forward to seeing you all back soon. It is really great seeing all the families going out, especially the many buggies and little ones in back packs - there was even a keen dad who took his son James in a back pack on course 1 (9km)! Makes me feel rather lazy!
Next week we change to THURSDAY (3rd Feb) on Ambury Regional Park. Entry is from Ambury Rd. The registration is by the information centre in a great area for a picnic. There are several gas BBQs so bring along a picnic dinner and make the most of our summer.

It was really great to see so many people out enjoying the lovely mild evening at Ambury Park tonight - many making use of the great location for a picnic and relaxation after their run. I was envious of the people who were set up in the region for camping and certainly look forward to the night orienteering event back out there on Saturday 5th March when I will be joining the campers in my tent in the paddock. There are not too many cities in the world where you can spend the night camping beside the sea, surrounded by farm animals while actually in the middle of the city!
Thanks to Kieran and Dwayne for tonights courses and apologies to any of you who got surprised by an electric fence. I was told one painful tale of someone failing to clear a fence and ending up with his foot caught in the top while he was on the ground unable to extract himself - OWWWW!!. The rangers are usually very good at turning off the fences for us during our events so this year it didn't occur to us to remind them - we will certainly remedy this for the night event!
Next week we are again on a Thursday and once again surrounded by animals but this time of a feathered kind with the addition of a few rabbits (plus elephants and lions). We are on the Western Springs map, starting from the Stadium at the end of Stadium Rd.
However, this is not all next week!! Saturday, 12th, sees the first of our true NIGHT EVENTS. We are at Craigavon Park, Connaught St, Green Bay with starts from dusk for youngsters or dark for others - depending on the weather this is normally from about 8.30 for youngsters and 9 o'clock for others with last starts about 9.45. The course are a bit shorter than for our usual summer series - about 4.5, 3 and 1.5km.with the shortest course being easier than the other two. Make sure you bring a good torch!
See you at Western Springs on Thursday 10th and Craigavon, at night, on Saturday 12th.

27 Jenny and Fero ---
Great to have so many running round the park tonight - what with birds and runners with maps there was almost no room for anyone else. Thank you to Alina and Kate Smirnova for tonights courses. We apologize to anyone on courses that had controls that were shifted - it is very disappointing when this happens but fortunately it is rare.
This Saturday, 12th, sees the first of our true NIGHT EVENTS.
Next week we are again on a Thursday, the 17th, at Panmure Basin, starting at the model engineers place on Peterson Rd, off Waipuna Rd in the Panmure/Mt Wellington area.
On Sunday 20 February there is the first of the forest events. This is on the old Pot Luck map, Woodhill, at the end of Rimmer Rd. Access to Rimmer Rd is off State Highway 16, not far before the turn off to Parakai. The starts are between 10am and 12:30 pm. For those new to orienteering this is a great way to get into the most exciting part of orienteering. There will be courses for all abilities. No pre booking is necessary, just turn up. There will be orienteering signs pointing the way from Waimauku.
Four of the top young orienteers set themselves a difficult course tonight - they did course 3 as a memory course - and did great times too.
Training
For those planning on coming to the forest for the first time next weekend we will have a brief training session at Panmure next Thursday, 7.00pm, to talk about a few of the skills needed for forest orienteering, when all you can see is pine trees, rather than a large lake like today. If you would like to take part in this please tell us at registration when you arrive so we have an idea of numbers.
There will also be a training session at the end of the event in the forest on 20th Feb where you can talk through what you did and go out for a walk with an orienteer to do a leg or two or get some practice at connecting what you see on the map to what you see on the ground.

A warm evening for the Craigavon after-dark night-event through the network of tracks and open spaces in a wonderful local park and scouts grounds with lots of native bush. Well done to the first time orienteers who gave it a go. The lack of sunlight certainly makes the navigation more challenging! Thanks to Jonty and Steve for planning the courses and to the helpers who who made the event possible.

Forest event THIS SUNDAY 20th Feb, plus coaching - details below
Next SummerNav - TUESDAY, 22nd, Alexandra Park - details below
Tonight was yet another lovely mild evening for an explore of Panmure Basin, one of our lesser used maps. With basically only one path round the basin there is a limit to the amount of orienteering challenge we can give you but I hope you enjoyed the pleasant environment. Those of you who ran the track at the eastern extreme of the basin will have been entertained by the many shags that roost and feed in the area, as well as some fairly impressive houses! Did any of you try roaring at the lions? If not next time do - they roar back!!! With the heat of the evening there were times when being out behind the boat that was towing the water skier around just behind the campermatic seemed somewhat appealing! It was quite an impressive display! I suspect there may have been a few course 1 runners who were quite keen to try and hitch a lift across the lake with them.
THIS WEEKEND SEES THE FIRST OF OUR FOREST EVENTS FOR 2011
THIS SUNDAY 20th Feb, Woodhill forest. The event is at the beach end of Rimmer Road, off SH16, a few minutes before the Parakai roundabout. Travel out to the end of the North Western motorway and follow SH16 through Kumeu toward Helensville. There will be signs from Waimaukau. Allow about 1 hour from central Auckland.
Starts between 10.00am and 12.30. Course closure 2.30pm
As this is our first forest event of the year there will FREE ENTRY for FIRST TIME FOREST ORIENTEERS. If you have never orienteered in the forest before, tell registration and you can have a complimentary run. We are hoping that this will entice you to come and give forest orienteering a go - if you enjoy the park orienteering you will just love forest orienteering!! There will be 6 courses to choose from so there will most certainly be one suitable for your level of orienteering experience and fitness. There will be plenty of club members available to give you some advice on which course to do and how to get started.
Club members - it is only 2 months until the Nationals, so this is a great opportunity to get out into the forest and do some serious orienteering, The courses have been set for you by our A grade controller and club mapper, Selwyn Palmer, so you can be assured of a well set event.
Sport Ident timing will be used so those that own a card make sure you bring it.
Costs:
Non members Senior $15, Student $7.50, Family $30
Members Senior $10, Student $5, Family $20
Sport Ident Card hire $3, (under 10 free)
First time in the forest FREE
There will be a brief coaching session, starting at 1pm for those inexperienced in forest orienteering to help you translate what you see on the map to what you see around you on the ground. If you would like to take part in this please tell registration when you arrive so we know how many coaches will be needed.

A bit of a wet one tonight but there were several comments from those that ventured out (and there were a good number of you) that it was in fact much more pleasant conditions for running in than it was last week in the heat. Thanks Annette and Selwyn for a great set of courses tonight - lots of route choose on the longer courses and great use made of the completely remapped Alexandra Park/showgrounds area for course 3 and 4 (or 3+4 for those that chose the longer version)

NIGHT EVENT THIS SATURDAY - Details below
The Domain was abuzz tonight with people running in all directions, map in hand. It was especially great to see all the youth groups, school pupils and new-comers. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Thanks Paul and Simon for the courses and to our visitor from Italy - Giovanni, who so kindly has remapped the area for us in his spare time while in Auckland.
This Saturday has the second of our real NIGHT events. This time we are at Ambury Park, beside the park headquarters at the end of Ambury Rd. Starts will be dusk for young children and dark for everyone else - probably about 8.15 and 8.45 with last starts at 9.30. Come a bit early and have a BBQ tea before your run or bring a tent and camp the night (register with ARC this week if you plan to camp the night). Club members, this is your last chance to get a bit of training in the dark before the Katoa Po night relays in Taupo on 12th March. Make sure you bring a good torch that will last longer than you will be on the course!!
Next week SummerNav is again on Tuesday, 8th March. This time at Self's Farm, Tidal Rd, Papatoetoe. The event centre is down the farm track that goes off Tidal Rd right on the right angle bend at the join of Tidal and Portage roads, just beyond where Portage Rd crosses the motorway. We will be using electronic timing, so if you own your own E card please do remember to bring it - for those without e cards we will supply them.
Because we are using Sport Ident to show those who have not been to the forest how it works we will not charge for the hire of the cards for this event - however we could run short of cards so please do remember to bring your cards. For any unreturned cards there is a charge of $50.

Great views tonight into the interesting volcanic rock formations and caves of the Ambury volcanic lava fields. Areas visited during the day seemed to reveal more detail with beams of light. It also revealed lots of reflective eyes from resting livestock watching us in the darkness. Darkness certainly makes navigating the courses much more challenging! Well done to the juniors who decided to make it even more challenging by doing course one as a memory course - only referring to the map at the start line! Luckily the forecasted heavy rain eased to light rain for the event. Great to see some new people having a go!
Thanks to Rueben and Mark for planning and setting up the courses; Alistair and Joanna for organising the map printing and registration.

Although the nights are starting to cool down there were many very warm looking runners who returned at the end of their run around Self's Farm tonight. There were many comments about the lovely area that is a real surprise if you have not been fortunate enough to have visited this private farm before. We are very grateful to Mr Self who so kindly grants us access each year. One competitor there tonight informed us he knew it well as he used to run his school cross country champs there may years ago - he says the hills were steeper then though!! (odd as I am sure they have actually grown steeper over the last few years!).
Thank you Aiden and Sandra for tonight's courses. It was great to see Sandra there putting out controls tonight after suffering a very nasty cut during the Domain event last week. She asked that we pass on her thanks to the many people who offered their assistance to her last week.
My apologies to the early arrivals tonight who had to wait a while for the arrival of the e cards. This was my fault entirely as they got left sitting in our garage and a frantic plea had to go out to a family member to bring them out for us. Not good I am sorry!!
Next week is the last but one for SummerNav 2010-2011. We change to WEDNESDAY night, 16th March on Lloyd Elsmore park, with the event centre on Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga
The final SummerNav, the following week will again be on Wednesday (23rd) at Ellerslie Racecourse. We are running this final event as a FUND RAISER FOR THE EARTHQUAKE APPEAL .
EVERY CENT collected on the 23rd will be donated to the earthquake appeal so lets make it a record turn out - bring along all your friends, relatives, school and work mates so that orienteering can help make a difference for those who have suffered in Christchurch.
Also coming up, on Sunday 20th March is another SUNDAY FOREST EVENT. There will be courses suitable for all so do come along and give it a go. I am sure you will not be disappointed!

It was a case of headlamps to finish the pack up tonight as the nights are starting to close in on us but there was a great turn out of people to enjoy Bob and Roger's course around a park which is becoming more and more attractive each time we visit as the with all the trees now starting to become mature. Sorry to those who struggled with the control that went missing briefly. Eagle eyes on one of the competitors spied it in the stream so it was returned again to its rightful spot but in the mean time some of you spent some time hunting for it.
Next week is the FINAL of SummerNav for 2010-11 and is our Christchurch Earthquake Appeal night so please do bring along a group of friends - see details below. How many of you partook of Hells Pizza or pasta on the way home tonight to do your bit for the Earthquake appeal - it was a very good excuse for an easy meal today!

What a wonderfully generous lot of people you all are! Thanks to a great turn out at our final SummerNav event for the season, and aided by many people declining their change, plus some very generous individual donations the club will be forwarding
ONE THOUSAND AND ONE DOLLARS AND SIXTY CENTS yes that is $1001.60
to the the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Orienteering can feel it has made a wee bit a difference for all those who are struggling to rebuild their lives in Christchurch.
Thank you Mike, for your courses tonight and for the great idea of adding a 3 legged O course to the event. That certainly added a bit of a difference!
Although SummerNav has finished for 7 months there are HEAPS of orienteering events of all sorts in the interim. The NW club is running a series of Rogaines on Sundays over the next few weeks, followed by the more traditional orienteering events most Sundays throughout winter. There is a 3 day Orienteering Carnival at Queens Birthday weekend, night street events in the city (dates of the first set of these will be emailed VERY soon), some city sprint events on Saturday afternoons (don't be put off by the name - just nice short events similar to course 3 from SummerNav) .... That is just a taste of it! We look forward to seeing you at these events in the months to come.
Club Orienteers - don't forget that Easter and the Nationals are getting very close. Closing date for entries with the Hawkes Bay club is 1st April (next Friday) so get your entries in now so there is a great turnout from the 3 Auckland clubs.
THIS SUNDAY 27th March sees the start of the rogaine series on a beautiful new area of farm and native bush between Kumeu and Muriwai Valley. Signposting will be from the traffic lights in Kumeu. Pre Entries were due by TUESDAY the 22nd March but you can enter on the day and I am sure they would still like to hear from you now if you know you are going so there are enough maps. Save money by entering all 4 foot events. There will be thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and all events are set with newcomers in mind, so plenty of controls that are in easy to find places.

A VERY big welcome back to the start of the Summer Series. It was really exciting to see so many folk back from previous years and to also lots of first timers coming along to join in.We look forward to getting to know you all over the course of the summer (and hoping that you will also join us out in the forest next year). One of the real delights is seeing so many young ones coming along, many taking on very long courses for their age. It reflects a very different image of young New Zealanders from that of sitting all day in front of television or a computer. Thanks to Rodney, a first time setter, for the courses tonight which people all seemed to enjoy. On such a lovely evening people were not even complaining about the climb back up from the bottom of the Domain!
Next week, again on THURSDAY (3rd November) , we move out to the east, to the Macleans map, starting at the end of Eastern Beach. Turn right when you reach the beach and drive right along to the eastern end. It is a lovely starting area, right on the beach, so why not pack up a picnic dinner to sit and enjoy after your run. The shorter courses will remain in the park and school area but the longer ones will take in some great road areas as well.
We look forward to seeing you all back next week, accompanied by friends, work colleagues, school mates and relatives!! We will have our flyers available at the event next week so please do collect some and distribute anywhere that you can.

We certainly had luck on our side tonight with a beautiful early evening which lasted until exactly official course closure time before the rain began to descend. Unfortunately that did mean we needed to start and collect controls a wee bit earlier than sometimes as darkness started to descend a bit early and a few people out late found reading a map in the bush was no longer possible. If some of you think driving across Auckland to an event takes a while you will be impressed to hear we had a group of about 15 come all the way from Thames for tonight's event. That shows true dedication! Also someone from Sweden!!
Next week the SummerNav event moves to WEDNESDAY, 9th November, starting at Michaels Ave Reserve, Michaels Ave, Ellerslie (Michaels Ave runs between the Ellerslie Penrose Highway and Marua Rd). The longest course will also visit the very pleasant Waiatarua reserve. If you have not yet bought a seasons ticket and would still like to you can still do so at an event or over the web. You can subtract off anything you have already paid in entry fees.
Auckland Interclub Relays - THIS SUNDAY, Hobsonville map. See AOC website for access details. Club members, if you have not let your club know you are coming, please do so as soon as possible. We are wanting to make this a really fun finale to the year. There will be both a mixed long and mixed short event (with white, yellow and orange courses). It will also be followed by a series of fun events for the INAUGURAL CLUB CHALLENGE TROPHY (from tugs of war to a string course race) Rules yet to be decided!! Your club needs you!!! We have also hired a room at the cafe where there will be a BBQ or you can purchase food from the cafe. If you really don't want to take part in the relay you can still come along and run one of the courses. The relay teams are made up by random draw at 11.30am, followed by a briefing at 11.45 and the mass start of the first leg at 12.00noon. Starts for people not taking part in the relay from 12.30
Non club members, you are welcome to come along and run one of the courses, from 12.30. However, to ensure we have enough maps please email auckoc@hotmail.com to tell us you will be coming. Costs $12 adult, $6 student
The Great Ape Race Thursday 17th November AUCKLAND ZOO!!
This race is on to save the critically endangered orangutan from extinction - and all profits from this Great Ape Race will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).
This fun evening event is a chance for you and your family, or friends or workmates to get a team together for an amazing race at the zoo - no experience required, just a commitment to team work! (but being an orienteer will certainly help!!) The 30-minute race for business/work teams and 45 minute race for family/social teams will get your heart pumping, your legs racing and push your brain into over-drive as you strategise to work out the fastest way to reach a number of destinations throughout the Zoo, answer questions correctly, and make it back to the Band Rotunda within the time limit. See http://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/GreatApeRace.htm for details
Please accept our apologies for a group of Course 3 runners (for their names and their times) for the Auckland Domain 27/10/2011 not being displayed in a email and on the club web site. This mistake is now rectified on the club web site.

Our strong encouragement to everyone to take a map bag tonight paid great dividends - Not a drop of rain fell and in fact the conditions for running were really pleasant. A very big welcome to the many new comers tonight - we look forward to seeing you all back again soon. Thanks to Dwayne for tonights courses which were enjoyed by all. Thanks also to those who took some of our SummerNav brochures for distribuing anywhere you can - we have boxes full of them so those that did not grab some, please do take some at your next event - the wider we can get them distributed the better.
Next week SummerNav is again on WEDNESDAY (16th) at Mt Richmond, in Mt Wellington, accessing off Mt Wellington Highway. Course one will also use Hamlins Hill. For those that don't know Mt Richmond it is a delightful little volcanic cone - has all the attractions of the bigger cones such as One Tree Hill and Mt Eden but without the heights to have to climb! It certainly is a delightful park that is often passed by but seldom visited - I am sure you will be very pleasantly surprised.
Also don't forget
This race is on to save the critically endangered orangutan from extinction - and all profits from this Great Ape Race will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).

The club relays were won by North West with Counties Manukau second and Auckland third - well done NW! Auckland did have the most teams entered though!!
The Inaugral Challenge Trophy was won but Counties Manukau - all three clubs managed a slick 41 seconds around the string course but Counties Manukau left the others for dead in the gumboot throwing and frisbee accuracy!

Bronwyn and Imogene (Mother setter, controlled by daughter!) certainly made sure none of us went home tonight needing any more exercise! They took us to all the interesting little sites and the best views even if we did have to be mountain goats for some of the time! Thanks to you both for the great courses. The lead up was not all plain sailing for them as, having arrived nice and early to get out the controls for us they returned to their car on Hamlins Hill to find it had been locked in! This did somewhat delay the putting out of the controls but despite the set back they had it all ready to go by 5.30 - a great effort. It was lovely to welcome a first time orienteer this week - at the tender age of 7 weeks! She surely must be destined to become a great orienteer, starting so young!
Next week, on TUESDAY we return to the very great favourite venue of Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill. Please note the change to a TUESDAY, 22nd November. Registration is in the archery car park just beyond the end of Twin Oak Drive on the eastern side of the mountain. We are very grateful to have been given permission to use this wonderful park again this year after a break away from it. Please ensure that you respect the archeological and culturally sensitive sites while orienteering in this very special area.
Also don't forget tomorrow is The Great Ape Race AUCKLAND ZOO!! On line entries have closed but you can still enter on the day by turning up at the zoo at 5.30. This race is on to save the critically endangered orangutan from extinction - and all profits from this Great Ape Race will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).
This fun evening event is a chance for you and your family, or friends or work mates to get a team together for an amazing race at the zoo - no experience required, just a commitment to team work! See http://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/GreatApeRace.htm for details.

Cornwall Park was certainly abuzz with orienteers tonight and our printer was kept busy printing extra maps. It was great to see lots of new faces as well as to welcome back some we have not seen for a while. It was a really lovely evening to get out on this favourite map to enjoy courses set for you by Becky - our youngest course setter of the year at 9 years old! That is certainly setting the standard isn't it! If you are a club member and had been feeling hesitant at offering to set an event perhaps you should have a word with Becky - I am sure you will agree that they were most enjoyable courses with a good mix of challenge and enjoyment. Thanks also to tonight's controller, Jeff.
Next week (on TUESDAY - 29th) we move a little further out West to the Craigavon map in Green Bay, accessing off Connaught St, just down from the junction with Portage Road, in the small parking area opposite Motu Moana. The courses will also incorporate Motu Moana and for the longer coursse a bit of the surrounding roads and parks. There are some lovely areas along the coast on this map so do come along and enjoy it.

Another lovely evening again abuzz with people - I doubt that Craigavon Park has seen so many peple in it for a long time. Thanks to Peter and Simon for setting and controlling tonight - with the spread out parks (some of you visited 6 different ones) it is a time consuming map to set on but the result was lots of happy people returning after their run. Apologies for those who got confused by the control which had the wrong letters on one course (XG instead of XJ). A wee slip up in the final preparation of one of the maps but hopefully most of you would have realised you were in the correct place. It was great to see some people completing their first course tonight with smiles on their faces at the end. Particular congratulations to the 2 young girls who completed course 3 with no help from anyone, managing to successfully relocate every time they went a bit astray - learning to be able to do that is one of the most important things in orienteering and most impressive from a 7 and 9 year old quite new to orienteering.
Next week the event returns to a WEDNESDAY, 7th December (yes December already!!) on the Big King map. The event centre will be at the back of the Three Kings shopping Plaza area, down behind the Fickling Centre, at the end of Graeme Breed Drive. You can access it off Mt Albert Rd, between the shops and the Fickling Centre, or off Mt Eden Road, beside the playing fields. This is the second to last of the events pre Christmas so do make sure you get along to this lovely volcanic cone - At least one of the 3 Kings is still there!!

It is hard to believe tonight was the 7th of the season, with only one left this side of Christmas. Thanks to Lyn and Norm for tonight's great courses. It was a very pleasant night for exploring the nooks and cranies of Big King with lots of comments from people that they discovered parts they had never been to before despite living close by.
Next week the event is again on Wednesday on the lovely Western Springs map. The event centre will be at the back of the Zoo car park, off Motions Road - straight ahead as you come in the entrance. This map is always a favourite and a lovely place for a picnic dinner after your run.
AOC club members, don't forget that after this event next Wednesday we will be holding the Club Christmas Party, awards night and AGM (short!!) at the Pt Chev Primary School so do try and get along to this club finale of the year.
For all the juniors from the region heading to Hawkes Bay next week for the junior training camp - have a great week. We look forward at seeing your new orienteering skills on show next year - but equally importantly, enjoy the many new orienteering friendships that you make from around the country.

Tonight saw the last of the SummerNav events for 2011 - it really is hard to believe we are half way through the season already! Unfortunately the weather is not making us feel that Christmas is just around the corner but the days are disappearing fast. Thanks very much to Kate and Alina for tonight's courses - hopefully they found the course setting light relief after their university exams!
SummerNav will start up again in January 2012!! on Tuesday 17th January on the UNITEC map, Carrington, off Carrington Rd, Mt Albert. In the mean time we wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a most enjoy, safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing you all back again, refreshed and keen for more orienteering in the New Year.
