A great turn-out tonight. I thought more of you might be away on holiday. Our course planner, Kieran was still on holiday, which meant you weren't able to pass on your nice course comments directly to him. Kieran has developed strong skills at setting interesting courses and tonight's were great, lots of route choice and decision making. Some course three runners were a bit daunted by a second map, something new for course three, but it was rare opportunity to really practice those detailed map reading skills.
The weather forecaster's suggestion of a shower of rain didn't happen.
The Parsons family stepped in to help with controls and school liaison over the last few days. Much appreciated.
Many thanks to the schools, Diocesan, Dilworth, St Cuthbert's and Cornwall Primary for opening up their grounds and facilities and opening gates as requested.

Also as part of the Auckland Botanical Gardens' school holiday programme, CMOC is running a 3 course activity on Thursday, 29 January. Courses Easy: 1.5 km, Medium: 2.4 km,Hard: 3.5 km. Entry will be via Hill Road, Manurewa (the main entrance). Starts will be between 10am and 1 pm (approx.). There will be no charge.
On a sad note we would like to acknowledge the passing Bert Chapman over the Christmas break. Bert has, for more years than any of us can remember, been a real stalwart of orienteering in the Auckland region and a regular face at SummerNav. He worked tirelessly for the sport and was always the first to volunteer to assist at schools events when not committed to assisting on the Athletics track. We will all very much miss Bert's presence at our events and pass on our deepest condolences to his daughter, Suzanne and grandchildren Thomas, Heidi and Liam who made 3 generations attending almost all events.

Tonight's event was part of the SummerNav series and we certainly could not doubt the Summer bit this evening. It was a beautiful evening, without a sign of the forecast rain and there were lots of extremely hot people returning to the campermatic after their run, as well as expressions of gratitude that the college decided to water their playing fields, allowing a quick shower under the sprinkler on the way past. A very big welcome to all the new comers there tonight - we hope you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to welcoming you back at future events.

Our wonderful summer continued tonight, obliging with a beautiful evening in which to explore the many, very varied nooks and crannies of the UNITEC campus map. I especially enjoyed a visit down to the lovely Oakley Creek area which contrasts with finding your way through the maze formed by the prefab buildings. The courses tonight were provided for us by 3 of our very promising junior members of the club and there were many people enquiring who was responsible as they had really enjoyed the challenge provided. The following message/tip was sent by the controller There were several puzzled faces searching for a particular control tonight which shows how important control descriptions can be!" This is a message we could all heed in the park and sprint events - when orienteering in the forest we usually look at what the control description is when planning our approach to the control but in the speed of a sprint event it is easy to not bother - this can certainly lead to considerable loss of time for some of the more subtly placed controls.
Next week the event shifts to WEDNESDAY 11th February, on the Cornwall Park map, starting from the Rotunda which is off Pohutukawa Dr. If you are coming along Pohutukawa Dr from Green Lane Rd West when you reach the sunken garden turn left and park in the parking area or along one of the small roads. There is more parking on the other side of the sunken garden. There are BBQs provided close by so if it is a night like tonight bring along your dinner and enjoy one of Auckland's most beautiful parks after your run.

What a perfect night for orienteering on lovely Cornwall Park and it was fantastic to see so many people come along to make the most of Ali and Jeff's courses. It was particular good to welcome many newcomers tonight - we look forward to seeing you again soon. It is amazing how docile farm animals are when they are so used to people running by, isn't it - did not even bother to stop eating as we ran by (even for those of us accompanied by a dog!) At the end of the evening tonight we were left with a set of keys. We were very reluctant to leave with these but after waiting for some time and wandering around all cars in the vicinity to see if the remote worked we decided someone must have come along with 2 sets of keys and gone home without this set. There are other keys on the bunch, plus 2 remotes - if these are yours please let us know so we can reunit you and your keys!
Next week the event shifts to THURSDAY (19th) on the Epsom Campus, Epsom. This is a really great map amongst all the building and as the campus is on death row we may not get too many more uses of it so make sure you come along and enjoy!

Mountain Bike event this weekend - A message from Darren. The MTB Adventure Quest is being held in Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest on 15 Feb as part of the Rotorua Bike Festival. Club members - the not to be missed Katoa Po night relays at Taupo are being held on the night of Saturday14th March. This a great event, with legs suited from the very young novice runners who start at dusk through to the fittest, top orienteers who finish off the relay in the wee small hours of the morning. Lots of fun is had by all as you cheer on your team and camp the night at the event centre in the hills beside Lake Taupo. Make sure it is marked on your calendar now! The First Forest event for the year is on Sunday March 1st, organised by CMOC on the Huriwai map, followed by March 8th, NWOC, Slater Rd, north of Parakai, March 22nd AOC, Woodhill and 29th March NWOC, Stoneybrook, between Waimauku and Woodhill, Followed by the National in CLM at Easter. These will be great warm up events for the Nationals, but also excellent events for new comers to forest/farm orienteering to come along, give it a go and get hooked!!

The Epsom Campus map, particularly with courses set as well as those provided by Tommy and Duncan tonight, certainly does keep you on your toes, doesn't it. I suspect a large percentage of people tonight found themselves back tracking at some stage because there was no way through or becoming rather disorientated amongst the maze of buildings. Course one people also enjoyed the opportunity to go for a longer run up as far as Auckland Grammar, adding good variety.
Next week , again on a Thursday, 26th Feb we are in rather different terrain, at Craigavon Park, Green Bay. As well as the very pleasant park and the Motu Moana Scout Camp grounds the longer courses will visit some of the other lovely areas along the coast. It certainly is a lovely region and well worth the visit for those not familiar with it.
Also next week, on Saturday 28th we have our SummerNav NIGHT EVENT on Ambury Park, with starts at dusk for young ones (8ish although we will be ready to go a little earlier) and when it gets dark for others (8.30ish to 9.30). Make sure you bring a good torch with batteries which will last the distance. These events are always great fun so be sure you have it marked on your calendar. There are BBQ's in the park and camping is also available (contact the rangers to make a booking). Come along and have a night's adventure. It is really lovely waking the next morning to the sounds of all the bird life. You would never think you were still in the midst of a large city. This event is also a great warm up for Katoa Po, the club night relays at Taupo on 14th March.

The words that echoed around the campermatic as people returned from their runs tonight were 'tricky' and 'devious' which I suspect brought a bit of a smile of satisfaction to 11 year old Ryan who set the courses for us tonight - Some of the people on the longer courses may have found that his smaller size made it easier for him to sneak through some of the greener parts of the map than they did! I commented to several people about the beautiful views from along the cliff top - it was looking very attractive - but they all seemed to have been too preoccupied by finding the controls to have noticed - I do hope some others appreciated it as I did.
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT we have the night event at Ambury Park. Starts from dusk for the younger folk and dark (about 8.30) for others, although the courses will be set up by no later than 7.30 if you really want to run before it is dark. Course closure will be about 10.30. Don't forget a torch - and your tent if you would like to camp the night there (phone the ranger to make a booking).
Next week we move to TUESDAY 3rd March, at the Domain, from the car parking area off Maunsell Rd, behind the museum. There are only 3 weeks of summerNav left so make sure to come along. The following week, again Tuesday, 10th we are at Self's Farm. Using electronic timing - so if you own an e card PLEASE bring it along. Then we finish at Western Springs on Thursday 19th.

Also, the Saturday night before the Sunday Slater Rd (7th March) there will be another night event at Slater Rd, with starts from 8.30. You are invited to come and run the night event, bring your tent and camp the night and then be there already for your run on Sunday.
And in between all these events the Secondary Schools Sprint series is in full swing on Monday. Wednesday and Thursdays!

The Domain was certainly abuzz tonight - great to see many youth groups and lots of new faces - including newcomers to Auckland for the start of the University year, both from other regions of the country and from overseas - a big welcome to you all - we look forward to having you at our events throughout the year. The Domain is one of our park maps where it is possible to set genuine , challenging orienteering events and James certainly made the best of it with his courses tonight. Most really enjoyed the challenge, even if returning somewhat exhausted. A few of the newer orienteers, only used to park orienteering will have found the courses somewhat more of a challenge than sometimes - you really had to use your orienteering skills on course 1 and 2, so if you succeeded in finishing your course - well done, you are well equipped to tackle a forest event. That was probably about as tough a SummerNav as you will encounter. Apologies to those on courses that were made longer by the unexpected arrival of the temporary fences yesterday. We had not been told that this was happening but as we share the parks with many other users these sorts of things do happen from time to time
Next week , the penultimate event of the season, is again on TUESDAY, 10th March on the Self's Farm map, off Tidal Rd, Mangere. As this is on private land we will be using the electronic timing system which we use at our forest event - If you own an e card please ensure you bring it - others may borrow one from us for the event. This is a private farm so please respect the property. Leave all gates as you find them, cross gates at the hinge end and fences at major posts. Report any damage. Respect the stock on the farm and do not frighten them. They are very inquisitive and if you are early out they may come to see you but soon lose interest when you have no feed for them. Last night the lake in the middle of the map was full of bird life, including some spoonbill - a great sight silhouetted by the setting sun
This Saturday night (7th March) there will be another night event at Slater Rd, north of Parakei, with starts from 8.30. You are invited to come and run the night event, bring your tent and camp the night and then be there ready for your run on Sunday, March 8th, at the second of our Sunday Auckland orienteering series events, with stats from 10.00 to 12.30. Future events are, March 22nd AOC, Woodhill and 29th March NWOC, Stoneybrook, between Waimauku and Woodhill. All these events will have a choice of 9 courses so there is certainly one just right for everyone, whether you are novice orienteers or are in serious training for the Nationals. First time forest/farm orienteers will be offered a free run. There will also be plenty of help available.

It is hard to believe that yet another SummerNav season has drawn to a close - it seems no time since our first event of the season in the Domain. We have been very lucky to have almost no rainy nights and even our last event tonight was a lovely evening to stand around and chat after finishing, and discuss the interesting course set for us by Richard. The lake was picture perfect, even more so as the sun began to set, turning the lake a lovely soft pink, only ruffled by the myriad of ducks, geese, swans and pukekos (plus the odd rabbit on the edge).
This SUNDAY we are holding an event in Woodhill forest, starts any time between 10.00am and 12.30. If you have enjoyed SummerNav but are yet to attend a forest event I would really urge you to come along on Sunday. There will be 9 courses, so definitely one suited for all levels of fitness and experience and because we are so sure you will be hooked on forest orienteering once you give it a try all first time forest orienteers will be offered a free run. There will be plenty of help available so come and give it a go. Entry via Restall Rd (the Headquarters road), off SH16, signposted from Waimauku. You will need to go through a manned forest gate at the entrance and then follow the signs to the event. There is a $5 road user charge per vehicle which this year will be collected at registration.

SI card hire $3, 10 and under free, family max $10, Buy $50

For those of you who we cannot entice into the forest there are still plenty of city events coming up. There will be 2 series of winter night street events, on Thursdays in May and Wednesdays in September, with a mass start at 7pm, for one hour. There will also be a series of Short O events on Saturday afternoons in June, starts between 4pm and 4.45pm with course lengths of about 3.5, 2,5 and 1.5km - a fun way to warm up after your days activities. Check the website for venues closer to the time.
