Western Springs is always one of the most popular maps and tonight was no exception. Lots of people came along and had a great evening out. Thanks very much to Mervyn and Aiden for tonight’s courses. The memory course required long memory and short memory – long memory to remember the map from the last use and short term memory to remember where the control was. As both were needed it was a challenge to all.

Next week, on Tuesday 3rd (Roger – chief organiser – don’t forget!!) we are at Self’s farm event which is the one Summer Series where we use electronic timing so if you own an e card please remember to bring it with you (we’ll loan one to those who don’t have one). Selfs Farm is one of Auckland’s lesser known volcanic craters accessed off Tidal Rd, Mangere. This is a wonderful map with lots of interesting things apart from the orienteering and electronic timing. It is a magnificent place for watching sunsets and if you are earlier you can see many planes landing as it is very close to the airport. The really early birds can watch the dancing cattle – they get tired and bored as the evening goes on- they are real characters. If you like something a bit more sedate the lake in the middle is a real picture.

Then on the Saturday night (7th March) we have our second NIGHT event (starts from about 8.30 or just before for children and when it is dark for others so get those torch batteries charged up! You can camp at Ambury park (book with ARC) so why not make a fun night of it – there are BBQ’s available at the event centre too. You can then get up on Sunday morning and head out to Duders Beach for the second in the Forest/Farm series! Sorry no dogs are allowed on Ambury Park – it’s a farm!

Don’t forget that if you are thinking of joining AOC, now is the time as we will offer you free runs at any of the remaining summer series city events that you attend. Just fill in the membership form from the web or collect a form at any summer series event. We would love to welcome you into the club.
