Auckland Region Orienteering Event

Results Message from the Get2Go Coordinator

Hi there everyone,

Thanks again for making the 2008 Auckland SPARC Get2Go challenge such an amazing event. Congratulations to every single one of you who took part and tried your best in all of the challenges and did so with great big smiles on your faces, despite the rain in the morning.

As the results below show, the scoring across all of the teams was very close. In the Waitakere/North Harbour region event last week Wentworth College just edged out Orewa College by the closest possible margin, one single point. I couldn’t believe it when this happened again in the Auckland event, I had to quadruple check the scores to be sure. This time it was the all girls team from St Cuthberts 1 (Dynamos) who were the victors over the all boys team from Auckland Grammar 1. The girls cleaned up in the Orienteering and Kayaking challenges and the boys won the Mountain Biking and were very impressive in the Rock Climbing, top scoring along with the 2nd team from St Cuthbert’s.

Some of you might have lost some gear, or accidently left it behind at one of the challenges. If you are missing an umbrella or a compass, left at the orienteering or a hoodie and a pair of shoes, left at the kayaking let me know.

A huge thank-you should go out to all of the volunteers that made the event such a great success -
So if you tried something today at the SPARC Get2Go that you really enjoyed, get out there and do some more of it. Check out the web links above to find out more about what they can do to help you get involved. Remember all of these sports are popular recreation pursuits in NZ and they offer a fantastic way to get out into the great outdoors and keep fit and healthy.

Hopefully those of you who are still in year 9 will be able to join us again next year and for those of you who are too old why don’t you check out the Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge. This is easily the toughest outdoor sporting event for secondary school students (year 12/13 only) anywhere in New Zealand. You can find all of the info here - http://www.opc.org.nz/08events/genesis_hillary_school_challenge.html

It's important to know where you are on the map, ensure the map is orientated with the land correctly, and have a plan.

Taking care to clip correctly can ensure maximum points.

If all 27 controls were collected, the students got bonus points for returning to the finish early.

Walk, jog, or run - you can go at your own pace.

Sometimes its better to run. Sometimes its better to walk slow and navigate carefully to the control so its not missed.
